Fantastic Beasts and where to find them

Johnny Depp was recently added to the cast of the Fantastic Beasts sequel film. As soon as the news came out, rumors started swirling as to who he might be playing. Well, speculate no more my dear Potterheads. Depp’s role has been confirmed via an interview with The Leaky Cauldron. He’ll be playing none other than the infamous wizard Grindelwald. Harry Potter fans probably recognize that name from the books. A duel between Grindelwald and Dumbledore was detailed throughout the series, but now hopefully we’ll get to see the famous fight in live-action.

When asked about the role of Grindelwald in his interview with The Leaky Cauldron, director David Yates had this to say:

“The whole principle of casting the movie was go with the best actor. Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘Who’s going to take this in an interesting direction? We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious,” said Yates. For these reasons Depp was the clear choice. “We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We don’t care if he’s famous or not famous. We just know he’s interesting.”

Fans of the HP series had already been speculating that Depp was cast for this role, but it’s good to see it’s official now. Albus Dumbledore has also been announced for the sequel, so my hopes for a live-action duel between the two may not be so far fetched.

What do you guys think about Depp as Grindelwald? I personally think he’s going to knock it out of the park like he did with Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. If you disagree, who would you have rather seen cast in the role? Join in on the conversation in the comments below!
