The Justice League Dark and Batman

The Justice League Dark live-action film may or may not still be happening, but that hasn’t stopped DC from pushing the paranormal crime fighters into the limelight. DC has officially released a trailer for the R-Rated Justice League Dark animated film that’s slated to release sometime in early 2017.

DC seems content on continuing their trend of releasing darker, grittier content. I’m never a fan of making a property darker just for the sake of making it gritty, but this film looks terrific. As evidenced by the name, when it comes to the JLD, the darker the better. The trailer features John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Deadman, and Etrigan the Demon in a paranormal super-team.

Matt Ryan has returned to the DC Universe once again as Constantine. He’s joined by Camilla Luddington (Zatanna), Jason O’Mara (Batman), Nicolas Turturro (Deadman), Ray Chase (Etrigan), Jerry O’Connell (Superman), Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman), Jeremy Davies (Ritchie),  Enrico Colantoni (Felix Faust), Alfred Molina (Destiny), and Arrow-alum Roger R. Cross (Swamp Thing/John Stewart).

The film is directed by Jay Oliva and is a story written by J.M. DeMatteis and Ernie Altbacker.

IGN has the following listed as the synopsis for the film:

“Justice League Dark finds the world under attack from supernatural forces that prompts the Justice League’s Batman to seek aid from occult investigator John Constantine. Constantine forms a team of other supernatural superheroes — Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon — to help save the world.”

I’m someone that really digs a good Swamp Thing story. He’s an underrated, underused part of the DC Universe in both film and the comics. J.M. DeMatteis is a great comic book writer too, so I have nothing but high hopes for this movie. I’m also glad to see DC keeping Matt Ryan around as Constantine since his live-action show was cancelled.

What do you guys think of the trailer? What other properties would you like to see DC or even Marvel bring to life? Let me know in the comments below!
