The Kingdom Hearts series started as a small tale of characters from the Disney and Final Fantasy Universes teaming up to stop a worlds destroying menace known as the Heartless. It was a mish-mash of elements that didn’t seem to fit together at first glance. Yet here we are, some 14 years and over 8 installments later, and the desire for Kingdom Hearts III is as strong as ever.
Throughout the series the story has become admittedly convoluted. There are so many Keyblade Warriors, Heartless, Nobodies, and other elements that many are left scratching their heads at the mere thought of putting it all together. This is something game director Tetsuya Nomura can sympathize with. In a recent interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, the acclaimed director spoke of the scope of Kingdom Hearts III’s story.
“It’s not that I’ve spread the story out, perhaps it’s more that I’ve separated the parts that would have ruined [Kingdom Hearts 3‘s] tempo if they were told then. In fact, [Kingdom Hearts 3] is overwhelmingly big, so it’s not that content has been shaved off, and it’s something I’ve worried over how to handle.
And then, to me, I’ve made a lot of RPGs so far, and I think rather than listening to long explanations at the start of the game, we want to enjoy the adventure right away, so I decided to try and keep the opening exposition part of [Kingdom Hearts 3] as short as possible.
Because of that, maybe people will be like, “why is Sora here?”, feeling like [Kingdom Hearts 3] begins comparatively abruptly. Of course, if you keep playing, you’ll work out the minimum about the situation.”
Tetsuya Nomura has quite the juggling act in front of him with KH3. Tying up all the loose ends set by the series up to this point is a daunting task given the sheer number of characters involved in the story now. A story that spans generations, worlds, and universes. My mind wants to explode trying to piece it all together, but I have confidence the man behind some of the best Final Fantasy games can handle the task.
Square Enix and Disney are expecting to release Kingdom Hearts 3 some time in 2017, but that’s tentative as of yet. What do you geeks think of the story of the Kingdom Hearts series?
