Game of Thrones is set to be leaving us soon, which will leave a fantasy epic TV show sized hole in our heart. What on earth could replace the thrills of Ice Walkers and dragons? Well how about Hobbits?
It was rumored before that Amazon was looking into optioning The Lord of the Rings into a TV series, well it isn’t a rumor no more. Costing a hefty $250 million, Amazon now owns the global TV rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels with multiple seasons of the series already ordered to production, including a potential spin-off down the line.
Well holy hell, that is certainly some pretty big news. There aren’t too many more details to spare, aside from the fact this looks to be a prequel series Fellowship of the Ring. HBO and Netflix have been approached before with Amazon about a Tolkien series, but they seemed to be the only one willing to pay up the $200-250 million upfront rights payment. Again, that is for just the rights. So now I imagine anyone with an Amazon Prime account will be listed as an executive producer.
This is maddening to pay such a huge sum for something you haven’t really seen the good for upfront. There aren’t concepts, no creative decisions that have been announced, no nothing. Amazon has the biggest balls right now for taking such a huge risk on this. Oh and each season apparently might round out to $100-150 million per season. Per. Season.
Head of Scripted Series at Amazon Studios, Sharon Tal Yguado said about the acquisition:
The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.
Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins representative, Matt Galsor further added:
We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.
This is certainly gonna be interesting to see unfold.
