Luke Cage jumps through a burning truck.

The bulletproof black man is back!  Luke Cage Season Two has been eagerly awaited and Netflix just released the trailer. The trailer shows Mike Colter as Luke Cage using his newly-cleared name and newfound fame to protect his home turf: Harlem.

Colter is joined by favorites from Season One. Simone Missik is back as Misty Knight, with a bionic arm that looks like it puts her even with Cage when it comes to strength. Rosario Dawson as Claire is trying to remind him that he can be hurt, and trying to bring him back the balance he found in the first season.

Bushmaster, played by Mustafa Shakir, looks like he is going to be an intense villain. He’s able to knock Cage down without breaking a sweat. After their meeting, Cage is shocked and reeling, spitting blood into the sink. Bushmaster appears to have his own series of henchmen and underlings, and seems willing to throw them into Cage’s path without a thought. In the comics, Bushmaster is a name taken up by two different men. It will be interesting to see which version they go with this season.

Then, there is Alfre Woodard. She is back as Mariah and back in the club. She has her own plans for Harlem, dropping the meanest lines in the trailer:

Harlem doesn’t need a hero. It needs a queen.

The Music of ‘Luke Cage’ Season 2

One of the most exciting parts of Luke Cage Season One was its music, and Season Two is shaping up to be equally good. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, in an interview with ComicBook.com, is excited to get into the heart and history of hip-hop this season.

…this season is really about getting to the roots of hip-hop, which to me are the blues and reggae… I conceived the show, we explored the entire diaspora of black music this season – in addition to exploring different cultures.

The trailer backs that up.  Classics “I Ain’t No Joke” by Eric B and Rakim and M.O.P’sAnte Up” highlight the trailer, bringing the same high intensity to it that was a hallmark of the first season.

In a pose like Atlas from Greek mythology, Cage carries Harlem on his back. This time, the weight might be enough to crush him. Season Two of Luke Cage will be released on June 22, 2018. Are you going to be watching?
