Despite how many might have felt about Suicide Squad, one consistent thing that everyone seemed to agree on was Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn, which was constantly praised as one of the highlights in the recent DC Comics film. Some saying they’d love to see Harley Quinn get a movie of her own.
Thing is a Harley Quinn solo movie has actually been rumored for a while and would also feature a wide range of other female heroes and villains from DC Comics such as Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Suicide Squad teammate Katana, and of course Harley’s BFF, Poison Ivy.
It is no longer a rumor. Robbie will be starring and producing a standalone Harley Quinn movie thanks to her newly signed first-look deal with Warner Bros. that will allow her to make any movie at the studio with her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which has one movie already in postproduction right now. The deal further highlights the relationship Robbie and Warner Bros. have had since she starred in Focus and The Legend of Tarzan. It also adds more emphasis to Warner’s initiative for striving to have more female-driven storytelling in Hollywood.
Robbie’s performance was a key factor in Suicide Squad’s $700+ million worldwide gross and add in Harley Quinn’s popularity from her first appearances on Batman: The Animate Series and her own comics, the movie already seems like a sure fire hit. This will also be DC’s second big female driven superhero film behind next June’s Wonder Woman of course.
