Mark Hamill confirmed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was originally intended to showcase his character’s severed hand, which was cause for speculation during a 2014 leak that showed a severed handing holding a lightsaber hilt floating in space.

Hamill confirmed the validity to this speculation when he sat down with The Sun, “the first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber.”

“A severed hand that enters the atmosphere, and then the hand and bone burn away and goes sticking into the surface of Jakku. [This] alien comes in, don’t know if it was Maz but it wan an alien who takes the lightsaber away, and then the movie proceeds as you see it.”
