The Inhumans were something Marvel had cooked up for Phase 4 to replace the X-Men. We were supposed to get a great, diverse group of heroes and anti-heroes that filled out the rest of the MCU.
Marvel has announced a change of plans for the Inhumans though and the change could change the landscape of superhero properties forever. Instead of releasing a set of feature films revolving around the group, Marvel has announced that they will debut in IMAX in September 2017 before joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC.
Marvel has already teased the Inhumans on AoS, but it looks like they’re going to be a large part of the MCU once they’ve been debuted to us. Ben Sherwood the co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group had this to say about the announcement:
“This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience. It highlights Disney/ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.”
IMAX C.E.O. Rich Gelfond also joined in on the conversation.
“This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic. It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.”
This kind of cross-platform appeal is unheard of, even for Marvel whose televised and cinematic universes are one in the same. Dan Buckley, the President of Marvel Television, publishing and brand seems to agree.
“We’re happy to see this unique deal come together, working with our partners In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it’s very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution.”
He’s not wrong. This kind of deal could have major implications on the way we view comic book properties in live-action. I’m sure DC/Warner Brothers will be announcing something in the near future in response to this HUGE news.
