Marvel Casts Angela Bassett as the Mother of Black Panther

written by Jordan Cobb November 21, 2016

The cast for Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther is already filled to the brim with top talent in front of and behind the camera from T’Challa himself, Chadwick Boseman and director and co-writer Ryan Coogler. Filming is set to begin soon at the beginning of 2017, but one more top tier name is making its way to the kingdom of Wakanda.

Marvel Studios announced in a press release that Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress and current American Horror Story star, Angela Bassett will be joining the superhero film as the mother of T’Challa, Ramonda. However she’s really T’Challa’s step-mother ever since she debuted during the much beloved Christopher Priest run of Black Panther and the birth mother to Shuri, her birth daughter and T’Challa’s half-sister who briefly took up the Black Panther mantle herself, but hey small change. Ramonda however is important since she is the Queen of Wakanda and given what happened in Captain America: Civil War that will make for some interesting drama.

Bassett as mentioned is only the latest in a completely stacked cast of actors for one of Marvel’s upcoming projects. Boseman will reprise his role as the titular hero with Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba.

What’s also interesting is that Bassett will now have been in a movie for both DC and Marvel. Those that remember Green Lantern from 2011 with Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan will know that she took on the role of Amanda Waller before Viola Davis stepped in for Suicide Squad this past summer.

What do you think of the news? Is Bassett a good fit to play Romonda? How excited are you for Black Panther? Let us know in the comments below!

Black Panther will come out into theaters on February 16, 2018.
