Marvel Runaways to Hulu for Brand New TV Series

written by Jordan Cobb August 19, 2016

One of Marvel’s most beloved and adored superhero teams is finally getting its day on television.

Hulu has announced that it’ll be adapting Runaways with Marvel Television and ABC Studios. A pilot is set in place along with an order of additional scripts with the chance of a full-season order coming down the line.

Runaways was created back in 2003 by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona and it tells the story of a group of diverse teenagers that discover their parents are all part of an evil crime organization. While they can barely stand each other, they will unite to bring down their parents. The description of the show is more or less in tune with the main plot of the book. The book was cancelled back in 2004, but only briefly as overwhelming fan support and popular demand brought it back.

That overwhelming is carried over by its showrunners, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Schwartz said about working on the show,

“I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life.”

Savage added that they can’t wait to start working with Marvel and Hulu.

A coming-of-age story will be nothing new to Schwartz and Savage as they were the ones behind the adaptation of Gossip Girl on The CW and Savage worked on Schwartz’s mega popular The O.C. on Fox.

Runaways has been talked about and rumored for a TV show for a long time and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb agreed with fans saying it would make for great TV. Loeb went on to praise Schwartz and Savage for their enthusiasm and their previous work that reached the audience they’re hoping for with Runaways.

The first Runaways team consisted of six members. Powerful witch Nico Minoru, solar-powered alien Karolina Dean, mafia child genius prodigy Alex Wilder, mutant Molly Hayes, flame manipulating Chase Stein, and telepath Gertrude Yorkes. Okay seven if you want to count Old Lace, the genetically engineered dinosaur that Gertrude and Chase have a telepathic link to.

Later members would include Ultron’s son (yes seriously) Victor Mancha, Skrull Xavian, and chlorokinetic Klara Prast.
