Marvel’s Netflix Superheroes Will Lead the new Defenders Book

written by Jordan Cobb January 12, 2017

With all the excitement surrounding the upcoming team-up show with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Netflix heroes, The Defenders, it’d stand to reason that Marvel would launch a brand new Defenders title along side it. Well that certainly is happening, but oddly enough it will be specifically about the very same team we’re going to see on our TV screens later this year.

Marvel Comics has announced that The Defenders will be launching in June after being previewed in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day offering the previous month. What’s interesting is that the team in the comic book will be reflective of the team on the TV show meaning this new team is comprised of Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage/Power Man, and Danny Rand/Iron Fist. The book will have the same team as Marvel’s recent event comic, Civil War II with writer Brian Michael Bendis, artist David Marquez, and colorist Justin Posnor.

About the book and what he wants to do, Bendis said that, “I wanted to do a sprawling, Godfather-like epic at the street level of the Marvel Universe, really putting out hooks down and creating a modern, elaborate organized crime story that is different than what has gone before, but builds on everything that has happened to these characters, as individuals or as a team, and putting them in the hardest battle for the street that anyone can imagine.”

Bendis writing The Defenders is actually pretty intriguing considering the history he has with all the characters involved. His Daredevil run is still much beloved by fans and critics alike, he created Jessica Jones and it was her relationship with Luke Cage under Bendis’ hands that helped rocket the longstanding hero back into popularity, and Iron Fist was a part of Bendis’ New Avengers run.

The Defenders was first published back in 1970 and has gone through so many iterations over many runs. For example, the first team consisted of Doctor Strange, The Hulk, Silver Surfer, and Namor. The most recent team to carry the name had Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, Red She-Hulk, Iron Fist, Namor, Black Cat, Nick Fury, and Ant-Man. Though technically I guess you could say The Fearless Defenders comprised of Valkyrie, Misty Knight, Danielle Moonstar, and Warrior Woman was the latest team, but let’s not split hairs here.

What do you think of the news? I’m looking forward to it, but let us know fellow geeks and nerds in the comments below if you are excited for The Defenders!
