Marvel’s New Warriors Heading to TV on Freeform

written by Jordan Cobb April 6, 2017

Cloak and Dagger won’t be the only superheroes from the Marvel Universe on Freeform. They’re about to be joined by some New Warriors.

The young adult superhero team, the New Warriors have been granted a straight-to-series order for 10 episodes on Freeform premiering next year.

Now for those unaware, let’s catch you up! The New Warriors are a team of younger people in the Marvel Universe with their own superpowers and abilities that put them on the complete opposite end of The Avengers, which has been the catalyst for plenty of their stories ever since they debuted in The Mighty Thor #411 in late 1989.

Of course this being a superhero team, it has gone through various incarnations and members and right now only one hero is confirmed for the show and its Squirrel Girl, who never was a member in the comics, but was on the team on the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. The inclusion of Squirrel Girl is of course due to her fan favorite status and the recent popularity from the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic. It also works since she has been revealed in previous comics to be a massive fan of the group. There will be five other heroes on the show.

Heading up the series will be Scrubs and Cougar Town alum Kevin Biegel who will write the pilot and serve as show runner for this superhero comedy.

Jeph Loeb will of course be involved given that he’s the head of TV at Marvel and said that, “Marvel’s New Warriors have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well. After the amazing experience we’ve had with Freeform on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”
