Love it or hate it, Suicide Squad did make major bank at the box office for DC And Warner Bros. and that of course means its time to start getting the sequel ready.
Warner is on the lookout for a new director, seemingly replacing previous director and screenwriter of the first film, David Ayer. No concrete word has come out really as to how involved Ayer would be if he even is still attached to the project in someway. Regardless though, the studio is looking ahead for a new hand to helm the sequel and at the top right now is Mel Gibson.
Gibson’s name being involved is certainly odd considering it really isn’t one of the first names your mind would come to with this sort of project, but the recent buzz and reception from his Academy Award-nominated film, Hacksaw Ridge has certainly put him back on the radar in Hollywood.
This news is weird since I kind of remember Gibson not being too big on Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice while promoting Hacksaw Ridge, calling it “a piece of sh*t” and also adding that, “I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot.”
Well you could say that since Suicide Squad is more about supervillains that superheroes, that’s why he’d come on to this and finds it appealing. That or the check is just that good.
The other names being looked at for the supervillain team-up sequel are Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland, Daniel Espinosa from Safe Hose, and Warm Bodies director Jonathan Lewis. Sources have relayed to Variety that there isn’t a for sure front-runner at the moment and that the list of potentials should keep growing.
The other question is whenever or not Warner might learn from their mistakes. Suicide Squad received a lot of flak upon release last August and Ayer himself even admitted some regret over the final product. Should Warner Bros. want the DCEU to grow and become more successful, maybe they should listen to the critics.
