Yesterday, a user on NeoGaf noticed something new on Target’s online store. The retail chain had posted box art, and made available for pre-order, a game titled Middle-Earth: Shadow of War.
Was it a hoax? If you search for the game on Target’s site now, Shadow of War is nowhere to be found. People began to speculate; Could the sequel to 2014’s acclaimed Shadow of Mordor really be coming so soon? How does Target, of all entities, know about this first? We would have to wait for official word from Warner Bros. Games and Monolith. Fortunately, the wait wouldn’t be too long.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War Officially Announced!
A mere twenty-four hours after the leak from Target, Warner Bros. was ready (forced?) to release the following official trailer for the game. Mind, it contains zero gameplay, and only provides the set up to the story of the sequel. Check it out below and get ready to be transported back to Mount Doom.
Shadow of Mordor introduced us to the intricate “Nemesis System” which made each fight personal and allowed you to pit orcs against orcs in war torn Middle-Earth. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is going to expand on the acclaimed system, Here is Warner Bros. on the sequel:
In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, players wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. The open-world RPG is brought to life through the expansion of the award-winning Nemesis System. The robust personalization from the first game is now applied to the entire world where the environments and characters are all shaped by player actions and decisions, creating a personal world unique to every gameplay experience.
When Can We Play It?
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is going to be released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 22, 2017. Visiting the official site for the game yields only that much information along with the fact that “Nothing will be forgotten”. However, as the video above stated, we can expect to see some actual gameplay footage on March 8th. That’s just about a week from now!
I loved Shadow of Mordor, and hearing that the Nemesis System is returning and being expanded to affect the entire world and not just the orcs is exciting. It was a clever innovation that has yet to be repeated by any game since, so it’ll be interesting to see how Warner Bros. and Monolith expand on it.
I don’t know about you geeks, but I can’t wait to decapitate some orcs again. Where you fans of Shadows of Mordor? Will you be picking up the sequel? Let us know in the comments, and stick with DHTG, we’ll have the gameplay reveal ASAP as well as all your other geeky news!
