Like clockwork, this is the time of year where Call of Duty leaks sprout from the ground like flowers. Oh, boy does this year’s release smell sweet with rumors of a Modern Warfare 2 Remastered and Black Ops 4.
The internet has been swirling with rumors of the next CoD entry and it’s starting to peak. An impending release this fall makes sense in many ways.
Next year marks the 10th anniversary of Modern Warfare 2 and 2016’s Infinite Warfare came with Modern Warfare Remastered. This was the only way to access the game before MW had a standalone release the following year for its 10th year.
Remasters typically feature all the content that was in a game’s original life cycle. Modern Warfare Remastered went a different route with post-release microtransactions and charging for old DLC maps at a higher price than the original.
Infinity Ward developed the first two Modern Warfare’s before the many members split to form Respawn Entertainment by the third. They’ve been working on the critically acclaimed Titanfall series under rival company Electronic Arts.
The Cycle Continues
CoD has three developers currently making games, Sledgehammer, Treyarch, and Infinity Ward. They are interchanged to keep “fresh ideas” and this year is Treyarch’s turn. They’ve worked on the Black Ops series since 2010 and a sequel could be a response to waning sales.
The official reveals should come in Q2, which is from April to June. These are the period’s Call of Duty announcements happen. CoD leaks tend to be pretty spot on around this time and Activision has been on a remaster spree with Crash Bandicoot, Warcraft, and the upcoming Spyro.
Black Ops 4 is expected to hit major platforms: PS4, Xbox, PC, and on the Switch for the first time ever. There is no word yet whether or not the two titles will only be bundled or separate on launch.
