Matt Groening is set to develop a new adult animated series for Netflix, titled Disenchantment. The new show from the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama will be an epic medieval fantasy comedy. It is shooting for a 2018 release.
“Ultimately,” says Matt Groening, “Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
“Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.”
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes and will stream 10 of them at a time. We can expect it to carry a look and feel similar to Futurama. After all, Rough Draft Studios are also handling the animation. Groening and Josh Weinstein will executive produce.
With Futurama‘s latest series finale airing on September 4, 2013 (for now?!), it’s awesome to hear that Groening is working his magic once again. The Simpsons show is still going strong and is currently the longest-running American primetime TV series in history. Disenchantment will be an interesting venture for Groening, as The Simpson takes place in the present, Futurama in the future, and this new show in the past. Love it!
Netflix is further establishing itself as a legitimate TV network and film studio. After all, Groening is just the latest in a string of big names to jump on the streaming video platform. Hopefully, Disenchantment will be a smash success and avoid the chopping block that several original series have found themselves on lately.
So, are you geeks as excited as I am for Disenchantment? Also, what other Netflix releases are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!
