Steven Spielberg’s take on the Ernest Cline novel, Ready Player One, released the final trailer. Given past Spielberg projects, such as E.T: the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurrasic Park, and Jaws, we can only assume that it will be a massive hit.
In the year 2044, the world is gripped by an energy crisis and global warming, causing widespread social problems and economic stagnation. The primary escape for most people is a virtual universe called the OASIS, which is accessed with a visor and haptic gloves. It functions both as an MMORPG and as a virtual society, with its currency being the most stable currency in the world. It was created by James Halliday, who has recently died. His will left a series of clues towards an Easter Egg within the OASIS that would grant whoever found it both his fortune and control of the OASIS itself. This has led to an intense interest in all aspects of 80s pop culture, which Halliday made clear would be essential to finding his egg.”
Let’s see if this captures your attention. Check it out for yourself below!
Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse) as the main character Wade Owen Watts/Parzival, a super poor student and an 80s fanatic on the hunt for Halliday’s treasure. Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Art3mis/Samantha Evelyn Cook, an outspoken blogger intent on winning the quest to better the world. T.J. Miller (Deadpool) as the story’s notorious troll, i-R0k, a wannabe hunter, who is jealous of Wade’s progress and will do everything to stop him from winning. Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as the film’s villain, Nolan Sorrento, the head of a massive internet company who will stop at nothing to get the prize. Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Shaun of the Dead) will also star as Ogden Morrow, who co-created the virtual world of OASIS in the story.
Overall the trailer is amazing, you get to see both sides of the film, real life and virtual reality. And the haunting rendition of Willy Wonka’s Pure Imagination will stay with me for awhile. I am totally excited about this film and can’t wait to see it, it’s been on my radar for a while.
Ready Player One is due to hit theatres on March 29.
