Gareth Edwards, director of the ridiculously anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has revealed the spinoff film’s official theatrical one-sheet poster.
And it… it is just so damned lovely.
Felicity Jones strikes a bold image front and center as Jyn Erso, with the rest of the ragtag Rebel crew below. Meanwhile, the Death Star surface texture partially overlayed over Erso sets an ominous tone of danger lurking ahead, along with Vader’s mask blending in the top corner.
While studios almost never hire illustrators for movie posters anymore, it is nice to see Disney and LucasFilm continuing to embrace the grand adventure collage style reminiscent of Drew Struzan’s classic Star Wars art (among his countless other works from the 70s to early 2000s). Struzan famously came out of retirement to illustrate the Force Awakens teaser poster. The artwork added to the old-school touch employed in the franchise’s return.
Director Gareth Edwards made a quick appearance on The Star Wars Show for the reveal, also promising a new trailer. Catch the full video below!
Edwards turned heads in 2010 with his indie monster movie, Monsters, for which he wrote, directed, shot AND created VFX. Legendary Pictures tapped him for the 2014 Godzilla reboot, and he was announced as director for Rogue of One soon after.
I don’t mean to jump the gun, but brace yourselves kids. I got a slight hunch this guy might be going places. Big places…*
