Nichelle Nichols is 82, and just a few months past a minor stroke but will be joining a NASA mission next month, and will blast approximately 50,000 feet into the stratosphere. Nichelle is Star Trek’s loved Uhura and a longtime NASA ambassador. She recently had an interview in a Reddit “Ask ME Anything” session that she will be aboard NASA’s SOFIA space telescope when it blasts off in September.
She went on to say “SOFIA does not, sadly, fly into space,” “It’s an airborne observatory, a massive telescope mounted inside a 747 flying as high as is possible. I was on a similar flight, the first airborne observatory, back in 1977. It’s an amazing experience; you get a totally different perspective than from earth.” And like anyone else with the chance of a lifetime, she stated she hoped to get some wonderful photos. She also re-told the well-known story of how Dr Martin Luther King convinced her to stay on Star Trek when she was considering leaving the series. I’m sure we are all glad she didn’t!
