Director and writer of Drive and the recently released, The Neon Demon, Nicolas Winding Refn once expressed interest in making a Wonder Woman movie. Well we all know that isn’t going to happen soon since Patty Jenkins is in the director’s chair for the Gal Gadot led film coming in 2017.
In an interview with Business Insider recently, Refn told them he would still like the make a superhero movie himself. He said it would be great fun to do, but that he still very much enjoys the creative freedom he has had with his previous projects, yet would like to make a big Hollywood film where people are constantly running around the set with cell phones.
He then said which hero he’d like the make a movie of saying,
“You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”
Refn seems to want to follow up the female-driven Neon Demon with another film featuring a strong female lead and Batgirl might just be the ticket. It may also provide to be good since that rumored Harley Quinn film is said to feature Batgirl herself.
Refn’s certainly an interesting choice to make a Batgirl film with the style and visual flair that’s brought to his films. This also begs the question as to which tone he might go with. The more dark traditional Batman style of storytelling or the bright, colorful fun style from the Batgirl of Burnside in the comics recently? Batgirl has always been one of the lighter aspects of the Batman mythos, while dabbling in some darkness herself via the Gail Simone run in the New 52.
One thing that would seem most certain is that it will be Barbara Gordon under the cowl rather than Cassandra Cain or Stephanie Brown.
The Neon Demon is currently out in theaters right now.
