What if I told you The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario were no longer Nintendo’s fastest selling game titles in America? They’ve both been around for 30+ years, but they haven’t been able to keep up with the newer flagship title, Pokemon, in recent years. I was shocked to learn that prior to Sun and Moon releasing, Pokemon X and Y were sitting atop the Nintendo throne.
Sun and Moon have collectively sold 3.7 million copies in less than two weeks. They’ll face some stiff competition next year when The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releases for the Wii U and the recently announced Nintendo Switch. It’ll be really interesting to see if releasing on dual consoles will help boost the sales speed of the new Zelda.
Either way, one can’t help but be impressed with how the new Pokemon games are flying off the shelves. They’re definitely helped by the holiday season, but I think the biggest reason for the huge spike in sales has to do with the mobile adaptation, Pokemon GO.
I love seeing a game I grew up on being passed on to a younger generation. I have personally seen the mobile game get its hooks into my family and my friend’s kids; they approach it with the same rabid obsession that we saw sweep the country when the Red and Blue versions were released in 1996.
A lot has changed since then, but Nintendo has made those little changes around their same, award-winning formula. If you needed any more motivation to pick up the hot holiday item, check out the American game play trailer below.
Have you guys picked up Pokemon Sun and Moon? What do you think of it? I personally haven’t played it, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether or not I should pick it up in the comments below!
