New Japan Pro-Wrestling held its annual Power Struggle event in Osaka over the weekend and the event featured two heavy announcements for the promotion.
The first announcement was that New Japan will be returning to the United States next year to hold another event, Strong Style Evolved. The event will take place on March 25, 2018 and will be held in Long Beach, California, the same location as the G1 Special earlier this summer. Only difference this time is the venue. The G1 Special was held in the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, whereas Strong Style Evolved will be held in the Walter Pyramid, which can host a larger audience than the previous location.
So far no stars have been announced to appear.
The other announcement later in the show came as a true shocker. After successfully defending the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship against Beretta, Kenny Omega waited for a new challenger to approach him for the title and in a pre-taped video, Chris Jericho issued a challenge to Kenny Omega for Wrestle Kingdom 12 at the Tokyo Dome on January 4.
The challenge was thusly accepted.
This is huge news. We’re not only getting a dream match at NJPW’s biggest show of the year, but Jericho is returning to the promotion for the first time since 1997 and this is his first match outside of WWE in 14 years. Recently Jericho and Omega were seen to be in a Twitter feud. Many thought it might have happened on Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea, a cruise at sea featuring live performances by several bands and professional wrestling with talents from Ring of Honor that will set sail from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas next October. I think we can all be thankful its happening at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
