Rumours of an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie are nothing new. However, Star Wars news site Fanthatracks.com has this week reported on a source seemingly confirming rumours of a Kenobi movie for December 2020. Exclusive details have been revealed about the movie’s pre-production and filming dates in the article published on their website on May 10th 2018.

Pre-production will continue at Pinewood whilst Episode IX shoots from this summer through the end of the year, at which point production of the Obi-Wan movie has been scheduled to move onto stages in mid January 2019 with the main shoot to begin in April of 2019. The project is being developed under the corporate name of PLT Productions (UK) Ltd. The scheduled release date is December 2020.

Who will be involved?

Stephen Daldry has been named the forerunner for writing and directing duties.  The British director won the Academy Award for Billy Elliot (2000), amongst other accolades and certainly has the credentials.

Whether Ewan McGregor will be involved is also yet to be revealed. Fans are campaigning for McGregor’s return and he is very much in favour of the idea too. Speaking in an interview back in March 2016, McGregor spoke to his desire to reprise the role and whereabouts in the Star Wars timeline the story could sit.

I’d very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a—I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.

Fans are going wild over theories of McGregor’s involvement. They have even taken to monitoring the length of his beard from one picture to the other. His recent appearance on the red carpet for the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Movie has just added more fuel to the fire. Now there is speculation that Obi-Wan could be making a secret cameo in the Solo movie as well!

So what now?

Personally, I can’t wait for Disney to put the rumours to rest and make an official announcement. My guess is that they’ll be waiting to see how Solo: A Star Wars Movie fares with the fans first.
