The next chapter of the Planet of the Apes saga is coming in July of 2017. Today we got a look at the latest film via the first official trailer for War For the Planet of the Apes.
Andy Serkis is reprising his role as Caesar, the de facto leader of the titular Apes. Woody Harrelson is the Colonel, the human leading the charge against the super-intelligent monkeys. We also get a glimpse of Amiah Miller as the unnamed little girl seen riding with Maruice.
In the trailer, Harrelson’s Colonel and Serkis’ Caesar take turns narrating their sides of the story. Caesar has tried to just make a home for his comrades. He wanted to live in peace alongside the remains of humanity. But man sees the rising of a new species, a new natural order, as a threat to their existence. Humankind is on the brink of extinction, and the Colonel won’t let it go quietly in the night. War is upon us, and if mankind isn’t victorious, Earth will become a “Planet of apes…”
The Planet of the Apes reboot began in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The series has seen much success since, with the previous films being nominated for various awards ranging from best special effects, to best actor in Andy Serkis. War looks to continue the series’ trend of spectacular visuals with the emotional through line set up in the first—Who should we root for? Do we want the apes to win? Do we want to see humanity survive?
What do you think of the trailer geeks? Have you been following the series? War For the Planet of the Apes will hit theaters July 14, 2017. Let us know in the comments if you’ll be watching as the fate of human and ape-kind is decided next summer.
