Every article from every outlet about Pokémon GO is guaranteed one thing. Someone will inevitably ask: “People still play this?”

Yes, anonymous person in the comments, yes they do. It may not be surrounded by the fervor and hype of its starting days, but it is still enjoyed by millions world-wide.

With that out of the way, Niantic has something in store for all you Poké-heads out there. New Pokémon are coming starting today! Pichu, Togepi, and “several others” are joining the ranks in the mobile app.

The addition of these Pokémon heralds the planned, long rumored, ousted by Starbucks (seriously, they’re official partners now) introduction of the next generation of Pokémon.

Marketing aside, this is big news for Pokémon GO players who may be getting burned out on catching Rattatas and Pidgeys. Whether it’s enough to bring old players back into the fold remains to be seen. I know I’ll be checking out what’s new in Pokémon GO this week.

Speaking of new things in Pokémon GO, Niantic is also adding a special Holiday surprise for trainers.

We also have another special treat for you. Starting later today through December 29, 2016, 10:00 A.M. PST, you’ll find limited edition Pikachu all over the world. These Pikachu will be wearing a festive hat to celebrate the season! Use the Pokémon GO AR camera when you encounter them in the wild to take their picture and share it with us using #HolidayPikachu.
