With the success of Game of Thrones, it should come as no surprise that other networks would jump on board. Based on reports, Amazon may be looking at a new series based on the Lord of the Rings series.
Amazon Studios and CEO Jeff Bezos are in talks with the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien to produce a new series for the streaming service. The interesting thing about this is that Bezos doesn’t normally handle deals personally. With Bezos reportedly involved, this sounds like a project that Amazon really wants. The Tolkien estate and Warner Bros. Television have been shopping the property for a while. While Amazon seems to be the frontrunner, reports say Netflix is looking as well. The rights to the property reportedly will cost between $200-$250 million. Although it may seem like a lot, both Amazon and Netflix have the cash to dish out.
For a while, Amazon focused more on niche shows such as Mozart in the Jungle. However, before Roy Price was fired from Amazon, he directed Bezos to focus on shows that would draw in a wider audience to the streaming service. The pursuit of the Lord of the Rings property falls in line with this change. As mentioned in the beginning, Game of Thrones started the craze of fantasy shows. While the Lord of the Rings movies came first, the HBO series really took the genre to the next level. And now Amazon wants to capitalize on the craze. For now, no agreements are in place between the parties. But if this deal goes through, this could make Amazon king of the jungle.
Sound off, geeks! What are your thoughts on this possible deal? Let us know in the comments.
