So if you have giant robots fighting giant monsters in your movie, there is a good chance you already have the money in my wallet. So yeah I loved me Pacific Rim when it first came out back in 2013 and eagerly await next year’s Pacific Rim: Uprising, but many are hoping that very soon, we’ll see the Jaegers will take on the two most well known giant movie monsters.
Well we could possibly get just that.
Its current public knowledge Warner Bros. is currently setting up its plans for a cinematic universe with the Godzilla and King Kong creatures. Godzilla was remade back in 2014 and Kong: Skull Island was released earlier this year in March.
While attending New York comic Con recently to debut the trailer and promote the film, director Steven S. DeKnight spoke with Collider and of course the question came up about the possibility of Gypsy Danger taking on Godzilla and/or Kong, DeKnight responded:
I won’t say there’s an Easter Egg but there’s been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary’s Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we’ve talked about is that could happen, it’s always a possibility. It’s by far not a certainty; it’s merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen.
Now the first movie was with Warner Bros. but is now at Universal, but Legendary Pictures still is the studio heading up the majority of these films, so the connection can exist.
Now DeKnight here is just stoking the fires a bit, as Godzilla vs. Kong is indeed set to come out in 2020 with Adam Wingard (You’re Next, Death Note), but knowing the higher-ups are aware of this possibility is actually something good worth nothing. He did go on to say whenever or not there could be more Pacific Rim films.
Oh we definitely leave it open to another installment. The tricky thing with something like this is you want to not end on a cliffhanger. You don’t want an Empire Strikes Back cliffhanger unless you know you’re gonna do a third movie—you want to leave it open but also wrap it up. So that’s very much what we did on this movie. It has a definitive ending but very much open to the next chapter.
Whatever the case is right now, the future is looking bright for Legendary Pictures that’s for certain.
