No question, one of the most beloved comic books recently is Rat Queens from Image Comics. The Dungeons and Dragons styled misadventures of four equally foul-mouthed, unapologetic, and rowdy ladies that the writer himself described as Lord of the Rings meets Bridesmaids has gained quite the cult following ever since its debut back in 2013.
Rat Queens has enjoyed much success and praise over it run and has snagged itself some top comics awards. The comedic fantasy title was put on hiatus back in May after issue #16, but will soon be coming back. Writer/co-creator Kurtis J. Wiebe announced that the book will make its return on March 1 next year with a brand new debut issue that he described as a “fresh, soft-reboot” with the first arc being titled, Cat Kings and Other Gary’s.
Not only that, but there will be a new artist as well with artist/colorist Owen Gieni (Manifest Destiny) taking the helm. Might be a good fit considering he and Wiebe collaborated before on the comic, Debris.
Wiebe spoke to Newsarama about the newest hand to pencil Hannah, Violet, Dee, and Betty saying, “Owen’s style brings a real return to high adventure, insane action and character comedy. He has an amazing talent for crafting a world and when his characters act, they feel genuine and real. Writing scripts for Owen is the most fun I’ve had on the series in a very long time. Our new start with Rat Queens is getting back to the basics. Four friends who kill monsters for money. Except it’s even weirder.”
Gieni himself said that, “Having this opportunity to bring these loved characters to life is a dream come true.” He also mentioned how he has been a fan since the first issue and is excited about creating new adventures for the series.
This won’t be the first new artist for Rat Queens though. Original artist and co-creator Roc Upchurch left in 2014 after domestic violence charges. Stjepan Šejic then took over for a bit before Tess Fowler came on as the regular artist. That didn’t last long however as Fowler said she was being “pushed out” for Upchurch to return to the book. Wiebe and Image did refute those comments since it was a planned re-organization according to them. Thus leading to the hiatus and Wiebe working on Rat Queens webcomics with various artists.
