World of Warcraft has announced their sixth expansion. It was unveiled during an event at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany earlier this month. The expansion will revolve around the invasion of the Burning Legion and build onto last years Warlords of Draenor with other features including the new Broken Isles Continent, a level cap raise to 110, new dungeons and raids, a new PvP Honor System, new Artifact Weapons like Ashbringer and Doomhammer, Class Order Halls and a New Hero Class – Demon Hunter.
The experience of the Broken Isles will begin before the expansion is released with an event called The Broken Shores. Players will be searching new zones for the “Pillars of Creation,” relics leftover from the Titans who once ruled the world of Azeroth. Some new zones include Val’Sharah where you will be able to enter the Emerald Nightmare and prevent it from invading the world. You will uncover the fate of Vykrul who left Northrend in Stormheim; race Queen Azsharah to gain control over the Pillar of Creation in Azsuna, and visit a new race of elves that have lived undisturbed for 10,000 years in Highmountain. Dalaran will also be moving to the Broken Isles and returning as the main hub with the mages of the Kirin Tor led by Khadgar to help you fight the burning legion.
Blizzard is introducing 36 artifact weapons to the game, one for each specialization. These weapons will be obtainable via lengthy quest chains catered to your class. Artifacts will have their own talent trees and adventuring will earn you artifact power that can be used to unlock traits, and then customize your weapons visually and functionally. Where will you be upgrading your artifacts you might ask? In class order halls of course. Order halls are meeting spaces for your entire class and you are their leader. Here you will also find champions to interact with the world. These champions are an evolution of the Warlords of Draenor follower system except these guys are much more important and have more customization options available.
There will also be a new PvP Honor system being implimented in World of Warcraft: Legion. As players rank up, they’ll now unlock special talents designed solely for player-versus-player combat. There will also be new prestige class system allowing you to reset your rank when you hit the cap and start over from the beginning. Cosmetic rewards like portrait badges, mounts or PvP Artifact variants will be unlocked via this prestige option.
As for the new hero class Demon Hunter, the story is that Illidan sent his elite agents back on a suicide mission during The Burning Crusade, and the introduction to the class will “teach us the true meaning of sacrifice”. They will start at a higher level as with other hero classes in the past and in addition to their regular abilities they will also morph into more powerful demonic figures. Go go big demon! Demon Hunters will only have two specializations rather than the normal three because on;y crazy people can imagine a demon hunter healing class. Havoc spec will be damage focused, and vengeance will allow for tanking. They will also be able to double jump!
While there is still no news about a release date or time frame for World of Warcraft: Legion, Blizzard sent out a press release saying that a beta test is scheduled to begin “later this year.”
