Elseworld tales are known to DC Comic book fans as the fantasy “what if?” stories that can only be told in a setting outside of DC’s regular continuity. Thus giving the comic book creators a world in which to let their vastly talented imaginative minds access to unexplored reaches of some of our most beloved DC superheroes. Tails that could otherwise never have been told…..this is known as DC’s Elseworld! That being said, it sets the stage for this weeks edition of Recommended Comic Book Reading.
Superman: Red Son
One of my most favorite Superman tales hails from one of these Elseworld mini series and it is called “Superman: Red Son”. I will give you a brief description of this amazing series but I will also leave key spoilers out for your very own enjoyment because I am recommending you all to read these great comic books!
Imagine if you please a world where Russia is the superpower of the world. Communism is the world government, there is no famine or war in these communists run countries. No one dares voice disapproval of the government…..even if they wanted to but no one wants it. It is all run by an Alien who landed on a humble farm on the outskirts of Russia! Now this man has to journey through his life with these amazing powers while also trying to balance his life in the busy bustling city of Moscow. Watch as the Russian raised Superman tries to save the lives of his fellow comrades from his advisory Lex Luthor and a poor but resourceful Dark Knight vigilante from the streets of Moscow. Not to mention the always looming threat of the civil war ridden America and their hatred for Russia and “Superman”!
This is one amazing read from the mind of Mark Millar! Mark Millar is the Scottish born comic book writer who also penned the already famous comics turned movies Wanted and Kick-Ass! He is also responsible for the Civil War storyline that Marvel will use in the yet to film Captain America 3.
