Rian Johnson is creating a New Star Wars Trilogy
Unless you’ve been stranded on Ahch-To for the past 34 years, you’ve probably heard that Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is creating an all-new Star Wars Trilogy. Announced in early November, Kathleen Kennedy, Executive Producer for LucasFilms, had this to say about Johnson:
He’s a creative force, and watching him craft “The Last Jedi” from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
That being said, it does look like The Last Jedi will be a great movie, unless this is just over-hyped. With Disney and LucasFilms giving Johnson his own trilogy, it better be.
So what do we know?
While not many details have been released, Johnson has been answering questions during his Last Jedi press junkets. So let’s run down the key pieces of information that he’s mentioned.
- While many fans of the game series Knights of the Old Republic hoped to see it hit the big screen, it appears we’ll have to wait a little longer… or a lot longer, if they ever decide to make it canon. Johnson said, “I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen. – For me, the possibility in a new story told over three movies, go anywhere, do anything, sky’s the limit, in Star Wars? That’s so exciting.”
- The new Trilogy will not be a part of the Skywalker Saga. Johnson’s response to being asked how it will relate was this: “Well, no. So, he’s going to do the next episode, so do the final chapter of this trilogy, and then I’m just completely, separately going to be coming up with a whole new trilogy that won’t be connected to this at all. I’m just going to come up with something new and do it.”
- New, New, New. While most of what has been said has been about what it won’t be, everyone involved has been repeating the same word: “New”. They want to create something we have never seen and something we wouldn’t expect.
Where do we go from here?
So with a blank slate and the desire to create something original in a universe with literally thousands of stories already told, where do we go? Where will Rian Johnson go? Should we give up speculating on what he could be creating? I think not; that’s really half the fun. However, looking back at Johnson’s other films like Brick (buy it here) and Looper (get it here), I think we could see something truly original and amazing. Not having seen Last Jedi yet, I for one definitely have faith in his ability to tell strong, original, character-driven stories.
