In what’s not the only TV/movie news to emerge today, Netflix confirmed what star of “The Office” U.K., Ricky Gervais, said during an interview when he jumped the gun claiming the streaming giant will be releasing his planned “The Office” spin-off movie, “David Brent Life on the Road,” in 2017.
Ricky Gervais couldn’t be happier that Netflix swooped in and scooped up the controversial comedian’s new movie as he has big plans for not only the film, but life after the film. He plans on doing tours in support of the movie after “David Brent Life on the Road” hits Netflix.
“[The office being on Netflix] is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas, do you know what I mean?”
David Brent Life on the Road is more or less a sequel to the U.K. version of “The Office.” Written and directed by Ricky Gervais, it follows the life of Gervais’ character, David Brent, 15 years after the events at Wernham Hogg Paper Company in the U.K. show “The Office” in a mockumentary style movie. The movie finds David Brent still in pursuit of his dream of being a rockstar, and those who watched the U.K. version of the show may remember David Brent’s humorous forays into the world of music.
Ricky Gervais looks like he’s having a ton of fun returning to a character he loved to play. The movie will give audiences a deeper look into the personal and private life of David Brent as it will mostly be following him in a documentary David Brent confuses as a telling of his “road to being a rock star.” The documentary however, is actually the follow-up to the office, a sort of “where are they now?” thing. Ricky Gervais has also stressed that this is not an Office film. Despite being partially set in an office where David Brent is a sales rep, the documentary eventually follows him on a self-funded tour with his band “Foregone Conclusion.”
Those of you may not know this, but Ricky Gervais does have some real musical talent as he was once in a real band. Well, an 80’s duo called Seona Dancing. A short lived, love it or hate it affair.
Ricky Gervais said in a tweet earlier this week where and when we can expect to see David Brent Life on the Road:
You can only see #LifeOnTheRoad in the UK & Australia in Cinemas, this August. Netflix have it for the rest of the world from next year.
