Robin Williams Wanted to Play Rubeus Hagrid!
It’s kind of hard to imagine now, but Robin Williams wanted to play a major role in the Harry Potter franchise. In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, casting director Janet Hirshenson let it slip that Williams really wanted to play the role of Hagrid. He approached director Christopher Columbus about the role having worked with Columbus on previous films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Bicentennial Man. Unfortunately, he fell victim to the franchise’s “British only” rule.
“Robin had called (director Chris Columbus) because he really wanted to be in the movie, but it was a British-only edict, and once he said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure,” she said. “It couldn’t be.”
While it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Robbie Coltrane (the man we all know and love as Hagrid) playing the role, it’s fun to think about what Williams would have brought to the part. The man definitely had a knack for giving us fun, heartwarming performances. My guess is, he would’ve knocked it out of the park.
What do you guys think about the news? Would you have liked to have seen Robin Williams play Hagrid? Are there any other famous actors you would’ve liked to see in different roles in the films? We’d love to hear what you think, so join in on the conversation in the comments below and let us know!
