Rocket Raccoon Co-Creator Soon Moving Out of Nursing Home

written by Jordan Cobb May 5, 2017

If you enjoy the antics of Rocket Raccoon this weekend when seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, you have comic writer Bill Mantlo to thank for him. Mantlo has been a legendary creator in comics, writing licensed comics for ROM: Spaceknight and Micronauts and co-creating the duo of Cloak and Dagger.

Well ever since a hit-and-run accident in 1992, Mantlo has been living in a nursing home with brain damage. Well before the first Guardians movie was released, several fans ran a campaign to raise money for Mantlo’s treatment and credit towards his creation of Rocket Raccoon. It was a huge success and even got the writer an early private screening of the first film.

Well Mantlo is being granted a private screening for the newly released sequel, but not just that but he’s moving out of the nursing home. Bill’s brother, Mike recently revealed Marvel has reached an agreement with their estate for the rights to use all characters Bill created at Marvel, most likely including Cloak and Dagger. Said deal is allowing Mike to move Bill out from the nursing home and into a house next door to him and his wife where he will continue to care for his brother.

Though the house has been built and the deal signed, Mike is still asking for fans to help out however they can. “I don’t like to ask people for help, but at the same time I would never refuse anything that could benefit Bill,” writes Mike in a recent column explaining everything.

And if you yourself would like to help or spread the word around, you can go to Bill’s official website or go to the Bill Mantlo Support Fund page on Facebook.

We here at Don’t Hate the Geek wish Bill all his best in the next part of his life.
