Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been unleashed upon us, and damn is it good. Check out my review on Don’t Hate the Geek if you haven’t already. News has surfaced that one actor was not only paid exceptionally well, but also has a sequel clause. Is it Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, or someone else?
Needless to say…
***MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!***
Now that everyone who hasn’t seen Rogue One yet – and those who don’t care – have stopped reading, let’s talk about this interesting revelation. Kathleen Kennedy made it clear that Rogue One is a one-off in the world of Star Wars. Judging by how the film ended (everyone died!), there does not seem to be any way there could be a Rogue One: Episode II.
However, Felicity Jones, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in The Theory of Everything, managed to ride that buzz and negotiate a sequel clause into her Rogue One contract. How this would work is still a mystery. Will she appear in a prequel to the prequel of the original movies? Time will tell, but her performance was fantastic, and audiences certainly want more Felicity in their lives.
This news also comes with confirmation that Felicity Jones was by far the highest paid actor in the film. She easily earned more than her male co-stars, who typically get paid more than female actors. Jones’ pay was reportedly over the million dollar mark, while others earned “only” six digits. This new wave of Star Wars films continues putting female leads into the forefront, contrary to the industry’s history.
Rogue One is performing well at the box office, grossing $71 million in its first full day. It should also have legs during the December holiday season. Although it isn’t expected to be the highest grossing Star Wars film of all time, it certainly demonstrates the power of the brand. It proves that even a standalone, non-Skywalker story appeals to audiences – geeks and casuals alike. The new Han Solo film should further demostrate that!
So, did Felicity Jones earn her seven figure salary? Are you excited to see her in another Star Wars movie?
