Hulk fans have been asking for it for years, and it looks like they might finally get their wish.
Thor: Ragnarok has been stirring things up on the comic book movie news front, and things just got even more interesting. First, Marvel revealed that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk would be joining Thor in the movie, and that it would primarily take place away from Earth. (Sorry, Natalie Portman fans — Jane Foster is out) Next, there was a wave of head-turning casting announcements, including Karl Urban, Cate Blanchett, and Jeff Goldblum. Now, news has leaked that a comic storyline fans have been waiting years to see in live action might finally be heading to the big screen.
Greg Pak’s Planet Hulk sees everyone’s favorite green rage monster exiled to a faraway planet called Sakaar. There, he is forced to fight in gladiator matches for the planet’s emperor, the Red King. He ends up leading a revolt against the emperor and taking his place as the king of Sakaar.
Think of it as Spartacus in space. But with the Hulk.
Seeing as how this isn’t a standalone Hulk movie, adapting this storyline and including it in a Thor film will undoubtedly mean changes. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe has thus far done well in taking well known and even beloved storylines and fitting them into their films. Though they may change details and even entire story arcs, they generally keep characters in line with what comic book fans expect.
If this does turn out to be true, how will the story be changed? Will Thor take the place of the Silver Surfer? Will the gladiator matches be run by Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster? Will this movie see the duo return to Earth by the end? Will they stay out in space until the confrontation with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War? Or will they not make it out alive at all?
Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, and many, many others, Thor: Ragnarok is set to release November 3, 2017.
