Samsung’s Next Big Thing, The Wall
Today at CES, Samsung unveiled it’s newest TV, “The Wall”. This 146-inch television is a modular monster. Yes, you read that right, not only is it huge but it’s modular, so it can be any shape and size, depending on how big each part is. Screens like this are often used in commercial displays, but this one looks like it can be used as a regular TV too. The screen is bezel-less too, that means you get seamless attachments from each piece.
The Tech Behind the Massive Screen
Samsung has brought this screen to life with “MicroLEDs” which is not only smaller than regular LEDs but is also a self-emitting LED. Self-emitting LEDs mean they require no backlight and will light up the image with just the “MicroLEDs”. These LEDs are also very efficient and they don’t use filters for color. The image on the screen is apparently amazing.
“As the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED television, ‘The Wall’ represents another breakthrough. It can transform into any size, and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels. We’re excited about this next step along our roadmap to the future of screen technology, and the remarkable viewing experience it offers to consumers.”
They are long-lasting and durable too, which makes them very economical. While this screen may be impractical for most people, the possibilities for smaller TVs with this tech are great. This tech, made smaller will offer more energy efficient TVs using fewer parts and hopefully lower the cost. With no restrictions on resolution and size, I’m excited to see what other breakthroughs come from these new MircoLEDs.
How Much Is This Going To Cost Me?
While there has been no mention of the price of the TV, we can only assume it will follow suit with past CES release TVs from Samsung. I’d say expect a very, very high price tag. I’m thinking probably more than fifty grand. Samsung tends to release these TVs and maybe in a few years, they’ll be at a reasonable price.
