Without the shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest and most important comic books in the history of the industry is The Sandman as written by Neil Gaiman. Ever since its debut 30 years ago on the infamous Vertigo imprint, The Sandman has changed people’s minds as to what they think about comics and we’re about to get a big celebration of that fascinating world.
DC Comics has announced that Vertigo will soon be launching a brand-new line/imprint later this year set within the universe of The Sandman, with Neil Gaiman himself being involved. Right now, I wanna throw my wallet at the clerk at my nearest local comic shop and walk out with all these books, seriously, I really love Sandman.
The Sandman Universe one-shot will come out in August to kick things off where we’ll see what’s been going on in Dream’s world. The one-shot will be thought out by Gaiman, but writing duties on it fall to Nalo Hopkinson, Kat Howard, Si Spurrier, and Dan Watters while the art is going to come from Bilquis Everly and Jae Lee providing the cover art.
As for the other books in the line, let’s take a look!
Books of Magic is Howard’s project that will be a sequel to the previously titled miniseries from Gaiman in 1990 and follow Timothy Hunter as he struggles to understand which destiny to take while learning magic.
Spurrier is taking on The Dreaming, a book following Lucien the librarian and Matthew the Raven going through a Dreaming without Dream.
House of Whispers will be written by Hopkinson and be focused on Erzulie going into the Dreaming as well as Latoya, a comatose woman whose partner and family go to drastic means to wake her up.
Watters is getting Lucifer, finding our favorite David Bowie-like devil blind and destitute while living in a small boarding house in a location no one can ever seem to leave.
So far no artists have been announced for each comic, but we expect that news should be coming soon.
I am a huge Gaiman fan and adore how deep and complex The Sandman is so this is like Christmas for me!
