‘Shazam!’ Movie Considering John Cena for Lead Role!?

Shazam! is the next DCEU movie set to begin filming. The cast is being assembled as it sits in pre-production now. Who could eventually face off against Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam? Well, it could be fellow wrestler John Cena.

As reported by That Hashtag Show, director David F. Sanberg and his crew are considering two front-runners for the lead role of Captain Marvel. In addition to Joshua Sasse of Galavant, WWE superstar John Cena has caught their eye. While this report is far from official at this stage, it could become a decisive turning point in Cena’s acting career.

Most wrestling fans know Cena as the jean shorts-wearing face of the WWE for over a decade. Those who aren’t viewers of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live! may recognize him from several small roles. These parts include Amy Schumer’s ripped bro of a boyfriend in Trainwreck, and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s drug dealer in Sisters. Both were great comedic departures for the star of the WWE Studios-produced The Marine and 12 Rounds. Landing the eponymous role in DC’s next live-action film could allow Cena to combine his comedic chops with his physical abilities.

Dwayne Johnson may not be the main villain in Shazam!, though he is still attached as producer. That does not mean Shazam! and Black Adam will not clash in another film – either a sequel or a Justice league iteration. Even so, featuring two of the most recognizable wrestlers in the same film could go one of two ways. They could mesh perfectly, considering how much Cena and The Rock have worked together over the years. On the other hand, it could be considered gimmicky, and might not be taken seriously by moviegoers outside of the “WWE Universe”.

Then again, this is a comic book movie we’re talking about. So, let’s not get carried away with being taken seriously.

Not everyone is taking this report seriously though. Umberto Gonzalez, film reporter for The Wrap, took to Twitter and said:

Insert joke about how you can’t see John Cena.

What are your thoughts on this possible casting? Would Sasse or someone else be a better fit than John Cena for the role? Let us know in the comments!
