Shazam! Zachary Levi Cast as the Superhero in Upcoming DC Film

written by Jordan Cobb October 28, 2017

At this point really, we all know the long history of the multiple attempts to get Shazam! onto the big screen. It has been one thing after another to bring the tale of Billy Batson to the silver screen, but now we have our leading man!

Zachary Levi has been cast in the role of the titular superhero for the upcoming installment of the DC Extended Universe.

The actor even further confirmed the news on his Instagram account.

Levi comes onto the project hopping over from the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he played Fandral in the Thor sequels, but he is also most recognized as the lead of hit NBC spy-comedy Chuck and voicing Flynn Rider in Disney’s Tangled, both the film and spin-off TV series.

Now for those unfamiliar with the superhero formerly known as Captain Marvel, a young boy named Billy Batson becomes the adult superhero known as Shazam when uttering that word. Shazam itself is an acronym for the ancient world gods and historical figures that make up the abilities of the hero itself, Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.

The adaptation has long been in development at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, but has struggled to get off the ground. Right now directing the film is David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) off a script from Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.

Also being developed with it has been the also long planned Black Adam film, starring Dwayne Johnson, the most prominent Shazam villain.

Production on the film is said to start in February 2018.
