Who doesn’t love anything inspired by H.P. Lovecraft? There’s too many books, movies and games to list that are either inspired, or directly drawing from some kind of Lovecraftian fiction or horror. The latest developer Q&A video from The Sinking City shows that it doesn’t necessarily need to go the full horror route, but even a bit of action and a bit of ‘investigation’ can be infused with tense mechanics. Check out the video here:
Although the official page for The Sinking City on Frogwares Games site starts with an H.P. Lovecraft quote, it follows up with a decent description of what’s to come:
“We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.”
— H.P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories”
“The Sinking City is a game of investigation and mystery taking place in a fictional open world inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The player steps into the shoes of a 1920s private investigator who finds himself in the city of Oakmont Massachusetts, New England. A city suffering from unprecedented floods of clearly supernatural origins. A city trembling on the brink of madness.
Can you survive this beleaguered town and untangle the mysteries responsible for its tragic situation or will you be driven beyond madness yourself?”
Although The Sinking City faintly resembles the stories of Lovecraft’s Innsmouth (Illsmouth?), it’s gameplay shown does look dark enough and twisted for some kind of tentacle creatures to be introduced. It does show otherwordly creatures, and fairly stiff animations, but nonetheless, I couldn’t be more excited for any game that’s inspired by Lovecraft.
Currently, The Sinking City does not have a release date, but keep following them on FaceBook and Twitter for updates, as they consistently release dev diaries and Q&A videos.
