The new Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, had tons of scenes that nobody expected. We encountered the lovable Porgs, the beautiful and elegant Vulptex, and even the horse-like Fathiers. However, none of them made quite the impact that the large, placid Thala-Siren’s did on the audience. Fans around the globe cringed in their seats as Mark Hamill milked a space manatee and drank the green milk that it produced. It makes us wonder just why this scene was even necessary for the movie, though one thing is for certain. It added quite a bit of comedic shock value!
rian johnson built a functional thala siren (teet and all!!) that weight 3/4th of a ton and helicoptered it into ireland just so mark hamill could do this pic.twitter.com/ag8NYvDd2C

What is a Thala-Siren?
These large aquatic mammals are native creatures of the planet Ahch-To, the venue for the beginning of the movie. This planet is where Luke Skywalker, discovered to be hiding out there in the last film, currently resides. The natives of this world, the amphibious frog-like Lanai people, routinely harvest their nutritional green milk. Just like the one in the film, they’re often seen sunbathing on rocks and are extremely docile. Behind the scenes, this being is actually an 18-foot-tall animatronic puppet worked by two people internally. One would work the shoulders, upper flippers, and neck while the lower puppeteer works the lower half, including the udders.
Green Milk Recipe
Here’s a question that I’m sure most of you have by now, whether you want to or not. How does the milk taste? Mark Hamill definitely seemed to enjoy his drink, but just what was it? Unfortunately, the creators aren’t giving much away other than it was enjoyable. Us, as fans, can enjoy something similar and far more delicious, though! The recipe can be found below.
What You’ll Need:
- 2 straws
- 2 (2-1/2 -inch tall) thala-siren cutouts
- 2 glasses
- 4 ounces white chocolate
- 2 ounces silver sanding sugar
- ½ cup whole milk
- Whipped cream
Ice Cream Ingredients:
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- Green food gel dye
Now here’s how you make it!
Step 1: In a bowl, stir together the heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, and almond extract. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Step 2: Stir in 1-2 drops of green food gel dye to get a light green color.
Step 3: Pour into loaf pan and freeze for 20-30 minutes. When the edges start to freeze, break up the ice cream by mixing it up.
Step 4: Return the pan to the freezer and repeat in 30 minutes, smoothing out the surface of the ice cream. Keep in the freezer until ready to use.
Step 5: Using the photo from StarWars.com, print out two Thala-Sirens, 2-½ inches tall. Cut out and tape to straws or cup/glass. Set aside.
Step 6: In a small bowl, break up the white chocolate and microwave in15-secondd intervals until melted and smooth. Dip the rims of the glasses into the white chocolate, then into the silver sanding sugar.
Step 7: Scoop the ice cream into a blender. Add ½ cup milk and blend until smooth but still frozen.
Step 8: Pour into the prepped glasses and top with whipped cream. Enjoy on those especially hot days on Ahch-To! (Or even in our galaxy in the freezing cold.)
The drink is supposed to taste strongly of almond and vanilla and be a lot more like a milkshake. This same recipe can also be used to make an ice-cream variant of the Thala-Siren milk! Whichever you choose, they both sound delicious!
