Last night during San Diego Comic-Con, Sega of America threw a party at the House of Blues to celebrate Sonic The Hedgehog turning 25. The Blue Blur is going to be very busy during his quarter century celebration.
Sega announced two all new games as well as the appearance of a “classic” version of the hedgehog in the mobile game “Sonic Dash!”
The game is surprisingly good for a free-to-play mobile running game. It focuses on what Sonic does best: run through loop-de-loops, collect rings, and save critters from the clutches of Dr. Robotnik/Eggman. With the introduction of the classic skin comes a brand new stage based on the “Green Hill Zone.”
Sega wasn’t done with the Sonic announcements however. The 25th anniversary is quite the milestone and shoehorning the hedgehog into a mobile game isn’t going to cut it for the Silver Jubilee.
Next up Sega and LEGO gave us a look at what the hedgehog will be up to in LEGO Dimensions:
Seeing him all blocky is charming to say the least. His custom stages in Dimensions hearken back to the classic Genesis stages. They also give us glimpses of Sonic interacting with the other worlds and characters in LEGO Dimensions such as Adventure Time and Portal. Then, at the end of the trailer something marvelous happens:
Super LEGO Sonic!
Now, for the real news to come from Sega’s SDCC celebration.
Sonic Mania! is a brand new 2-D game. It has re-imagined classic stages and all new zones. I was worried for a second when the words “3 Playable Characters” popped up on screen, but thankfully neither Amy or Big the Cat splashed up on screen. Instead it was the three classic Sonic characters: The titular speed demon, Tails, and Knuckles. The trailer also introduces us to a new mechanic called “Drop Dash” in which Sonic bursts into a full speed spin when he hits the ground.
Sonic Mania! is bringing the hedgehog back to his roots, and based on the trailer, Sega may actually be getting it right this time around. We’ll have to wait until Spring of 2017 to find out.
The final announcement from the party was of another brand new game. This one will be out in 2017 as well and release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, NX, and PC.
Coming during the holidays of 2017, not much is know about Sonic: [Insert Subtitle Here]. Based on the trailer however it may very well be multiplayer. We see another hedgehog join in as massive robots decimate a city. The trailer ends with the words “Join the Resistance.” A phrase that does imply multiplayer.
2017 Looks to be a HUGE year for The Blue Blur. Sega seems to be making the right moves based on these trailers. Hopefully they have finally figured out how to properly handle their mascot again after 25 years.
So geeks, can you even get excited about Sonic anymore? Has Sega let you down one too many times? Let us know in the comments.
