For as long as people tried to get a Spider-Man movie going, it seemed that people were trying to get Venom his own solo movie as well. New Line Cinema was set to go ahead have David Goyer write one pitting Venom as an antihero and face off against Carnage, but by that time the rights reverted back over to Sony.
Well now Sony are finally making it happen rather soon actually. Sony has announced that Venom will not only finally happen, but will be released on October 5, 2018. Well that was certainly unexpected.
As for who will be working on the movie the screenplay duties are being handled by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker, one of the writers on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach who have long been involved with Spider-Man adaptations are naturally producing this along with Amy Pascal. The film will most likely use Venom as an antihero, a role that character has played before.
The most telling thing thought is how there doesn’t seem to be a director attached right now and with the turnaround the studio, they will need to find one fast.
Now to answer a question I’m sure is on your mind and the answer is no, this doesn’t appear to be connected to the Spider-Man now swinging about in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony hopes to start their own franchise for the character.
Another hope among many is that this does better justice for the character than Topher Grace’s performance in Spider-Man 3 from 2007, myself included
