Sony Developing Spider-Man Spin-Off for Morbius

written by Jordan Cobb November 13, 2017

Well Sony looks to add to their side of Spider-Man films with a spin-off film centered on Morbius the Living Vampire.

The movie is set to be written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who recently co-wrote Power Rangers from earlier this year and the showrunners on Netflix’s upcoming Lost in Space reboot. They do also have experience with vampires having written Dracula Untold.

Morbius is certainly an outta nowhere choice to give a spin-off film to, but he is certainly a noticeable figure in the Spider-Man mythology. He was created back in 1971 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, debuting in The Amazing Spider-Man #101, also noteworthy for being the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.

Quick little history lesson, Morbius is Dr. Michael Morbuis, a scientist with a rare blood disease and who attempted numerous times to cure himself. However, that eventually led to him developing a form of vampirism and as anyone else would do going mad in New York City, fight Spider-Man. Since then he has become a hero in his own right, sometimes even an anti-hero, but still on the side of good. He was then later adapted into the Spider-Man animated series of the 1990s.

Sony are keeping details of the film and their take on the character quiet right now, all that is known that they just recently got the script after secretly developing the film. This would now be the third Spider-Man related film Sony is actively developing alongside Venom, starring Tom Hardy, and a movie starring Black Cat and Silver Sable, all of which will not be connected towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now if you’re wanting to get to know about Morbius a little more, you can go right here and jump on in!
