Marvel creator and comic book icon Stan Lee is the latest in a long line of high profile men accused of sexual harassment. It must be said that Lee and his lawyers “categorically” deny the accusations. Nevertheless, the employer of the women accusing Stan Lee of these offenses reportedly received several complaints.
The Allegations Against Stan Lee
Stan Lee has hired nurses and home health aides for some time. These new accusations come from younger female nurses that cared for the Spider-Man co-creator. Lee allegedly requested sexual favors and oral sex from the nurses, groped them, and paraded in front of them naked. The nursing company that employed these women stopped working with Lee. The nurses and the nursing company have both yet to be named.
Stan Lee’s Response
Stan Lee and his lawyers have issued a cease and desist letter to the nursing company. His legal counsel called the allegations “false and despicable”, and believe they are part of a shakedown. Attorney Tom Lallas told the Daily Mail:
Mr. Lee will not be extorted or blackmailed, and will pay no money to anyone because he has done absolutely nothing wrong.
We shall see as this story develops if any additional legal action will be taken by either party. It’s important to note that there have been no lawsuits or police complaints yet.
The #MeToo movement certainly shook things up the past few months. High profile actors and personalities in Hollywood and beyond have been accused of awful behavior. The purpose of the movement was to uncover the hostile environments that women must deal with daily, and empower women everywhere to stand up.
However, there have also been many voices saying that some accusations of harassment are unfounded and undeserved. Does Stan Lee’s situation fall into the former or the latter? Or, is it very tricky to speculate at this point?
