Sonequa Martin-Green is coming to Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery has found its lead actress in The Walking Dead alum Sonequa Martin-Green. A report from EW says that the first Star Trek show in over a decade will feature The Walking Dead star as a lieutenant aboard the Discovery.

Martin-Green will continue her role on The Walking Dead as she stars in Discovery. She is also the first African American woman to lead a Star Trek show. Discovery will also feature the series’ first-ever openly gay character, a lieutenant played by Anthony Rapp.

Brian Fuller, the show runner of Discovery has had this to say about the project:

“Star Trek started with a wonderful expression of diversity in its cast…we’re continuing that tradition. We wanted to paint a picture of Starlet that’s indicative of encountering people who are much more different than we are.”

“We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view. To see a character from a [new] perspective on the starship — one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context.”

The first episode of Star Trek: Discovery is slated to air in May of 2017 on CBS All Access.

What do you guys think of the news? Do you think this will mean Sasha will be killed off on The Walking Dead to give Martin-Green time to work on Star Trek? We’d love to hear from you, so join in on the conversation in the comments below!
