Reddit users are reporting being gifted Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty for free!
It’s the middle of January, but Christmas is coming early for some Battle.net users. According to various users on Reddit, when they launched their Battle.net application on their computers, they were randomly gifted a copy of Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty for free. As of Monday (January 24th, 2017) hundreds of users were reporting this phenomenon. It’s led many to believe that this is a trial run by Blizzard, who might be looking at offering the game for free to all users later this year.
The game revolves around three species: the Terrans, human exiles from Earth; the Zerg, a super-species of assimilated life forms; and the Protoss, a technologically advanced species with vast mental powers. Wings of Liberty focuses on the Terrans, while the expansions Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void focus on the Zerg and Protoss, respectively. The game is set four years after the events of 1998’s StarCraft: Brood War, and follows the exploits of Jim Raynor as he leads an insurgent group against the autocratic Terran Dominion. The game includes both new and returning characters and locations from the original game.
As someone who purchased Wings of Liberty at launch, I’m not sure how I feel about them giving the game away for free, but if it brings more players into the RTS realm, it might be worth it in the long run.
What do you guys think? Is Blizzard gearing up to offer the game for free or is this just some weird glitch in Battle.net? We’d love to hear your thoughts, so join in on the conversation in the comments below and tell us what you think!
