At the tail end of their E3 presentation Ubisoft unveiled a brand new IP: Steep.
Ubi describes Steep as such:
“Ride a massive open world of the Alps and Alaska, where the powder is always fresh and the run never ends. Defy and master the world’s most epic mountains on skis, wingsuit, snowboard, and in paraglide. Go solo or drop in side by side with other players. Record and share the most insane stunts ever captured. Dare your friends to try out your custom lines, then challenge the world to beat your best tricks and relive your most epic wipeouts.”
Scheduled to be released in December 2016, Steep looks very impressive. The map can be zoomed really far out and you can really take in the jaw-dropping vistas. The mountains are appropriately craggy, appearing almost menacing at points, and the snow in Steep is some of the best snow I’ve seen in any game yet.
At the show they spoke about some of the online features and they were impressive. You spend the game in an open world shared with other players. When you run into another player or group of players you can initiate challenges and set up a pulse pounding race down the mountain.
After the run, you can go back and review any moment from the run from the view point of any of the players participating in the descent. You can then share a crazy jump you pulled off, or your friend’s epic fail all thanks to the fact that the game smartly records any race you participate in. You can even select the sweet jump you landed and set it as a challenge for your friends and other players to try to match or beat. Steep also looks to have some interesting customization options.
They really tried to emphasize that on the mountain sport wasn’t always about competition. It seemed like they were aiming for players to share in their adventures, their successes and failures. It all looks very promising.
Ubisoft is also opening up registry for the beta here. Check out the trailer below to see Steep in action, and hit the slopes with your fellow geeks this December.
