Steven Universe, Same Old World

Last time on Steven Universe we found out that the Crystal Gems saved Lapis Lazuli, Jasper may or may not be dead, and the Cluster was successfully stopped. Now we’re entering into the newest episode, Same Old World. One of the first shots in this episode of Steven Universe we get a cute picture of Steven in his little caterpillar sleeping bag!

Steven Universe Sleeping Bug

Lapis is leaving Earth but there’s a problem with that. She doesn’t really have a home to go back to. From what we’ve learned about Lapis before she was trapped in a mirror that Pearl gave Steven in order to learn more about Homeworld. When Lapis tried to return to Homeworld she was captured by Jasper and Peridot and used to lead them to where Steven and the Crystal Gems lived.

It’s no surprise she returned to the barn after only a few hours. Steven, of course, tries to comfort her and show her around the different cities, including a place that looks a lot like New York, including the city of Jersey next to it. This gives us the quote:

“You might like it in Jersey, they don’t seem to like Earth either.” –Steven

Not even in Steven Universe can Jersey escape being the butt of a joke. After nearly dropping poor Steven we finally get Lapis’ back story—fifty-five episodes after Lapis’ introduction in Episode 25, Mirror Gem.

Lapis’ back story consists of some heartbreaking moments where you realize this poor girl has been used by everyone she comes in contact with. We already knew she had been being used by the Crystal Gems in her introduction. They were using her as a learning tool to find out more about Homeworld and the Battle for Earth when Steven asked about it.

The episode ends when Steven is faced with the dilemma of having to explain to Peridot and Lapis that they need to live together. Good Luck, Steven! Peridot has previously imprisoned Lapis and is not entirely a full-fledged Crystal Gem. I don’t believe Lapis will want to stay with her.

Let us know in the comments if you want a sleeping bag that looks like a caterpillar too! Until Next Time, enjoy Yellow Diamond.
